Take 2 battens say 1 2 by 1 2 and tack these onto the wide cedar board on the same lines that represent the top and bottom edges of the siding. Sometimes flares occur at bases of siding also. So far i have been using both tapered blocking heights of 24 and 30 for the actual 2 x 4 1 2 blocking attatched to face of the studs sheathing. Various siding materials have come and gone over the years but a handful of standards have remained along with the occasional newcomer. Mark these lines in pencil and remove the wide cedar plank.

I have been building some mock ups to try and find a combination of numbers that enhance a lower flare detail using cedar siding. Vinyl siding is designed to withstand weather and resist moisture damage.
